Music for Film

Music can be a pivotal piece for any great film; and yet for independent filmmakers, it can often be a daunting task due to overwhelming licensing fees and contracts. Fortunately, there are some resources available to ease the pain of the music rights dilemma.

Archive.org is an excellent tool for filmmakers. Not only does it have countless video clips from the public domain, they also have open source audio. As long as you adhere to the Creative Commons License selected by the artist, you can use the songs for free.

If you’re willing to spend a little dough, Freeplay Music has a wide selection of music which can be licensed specifically for use in film festivals. They also have discounts for students. Click here for pricing details.

And of course you can always get creative and make your own music or team up with musicians you know and make it a collaborative effort. If you’d like to share some of your own suggestions or potential resources, add a comment to this post.

Good luck!
