Still Closer to RIFF 2010
Ah, Easter weekend. Sunshine. Tulips. Chocolate bunnies. Good friends. First Friday. A very good weekend in the ‘Burg as Fredericksburg-ites like to say. The official calendar may say spring but with short sleeve weather here to stay, the summer of RIFF 2010 has begun. Strolling down William Street I ran into my old friend, Freddy Filmmaker.
me: Hi. Long time no see. You seem blue, what’s up?
Freddy Filmmaker: I’m trying to write a really dramatic ending for my next film and I’ve got this insufferable case of writer’s block. Any suggestions?
me: That happens. Sorry, I can’t think of a cure.
Freddy Filmmaker: Me neither. (Sigh) Hey, you guys must be gearing up for RIFF 2010. How’s that going?
me: Great! Actually the judges are screening films now and some really terrific stuff has come in….
Freddy Filmmaker: Really? Like what?
me: Um. Did you have garlic for lunch? Listen, I can’t say. You’ll have to come to RIFF 2010 to find out for yourself but trust me, it’s pretty cool.
Freddy Filmmaker: That won’t help me today. I need a great idea. I need a villain, a hero, and a love story! Just a good line or two will get me going. (Jumps on the bumper of parked Humvee) “Beam me up, Scotty!” “Out here, due process is a bullet.” “Ah, what light through yonder window breaks?”
me: I’m pretty sure those are taken. They sound familiar. And there’s a big angry guy barreling towards us. I think that’s his car.
Freddy Filmmaker: Think so? (Jumps from bumper. Attempts to look innocent) Look, I’m on a roll here. Creative juices are flowing, I can feel it. Want to stick around and hear where I’m going with this?
me: Actually, you are blocking my path to the ice cream shop.
Freddy Filmmaker: O.K. but if I break my writer’s block without your help I won’t name any of my heroines after you.
me: I’ll chance it. See you at RIFF.
Freddy Filmmaker: (skipping down William Street) “You talkin’ to me?” “Fasten your seatbelts—it’s gonna be a bumpy night!” “We’re burning daylight”……………………..
